Brainstorming

Here one can put some ideas before trying to organize them into the sections below.

  • Ventilation (from existing portable aircon unit combined with window)
  • Vending machine with Arduino, raspberry pies, and sensors
  • Fire extinguisher(s)
  • Makerbots (3D printers)
  • Door to exterior
  • Sink / running water
  • CNC router table
  • (Portable) table saw
  • Under-counter Cabinets containing hand tools
  • Four computer stations
  • Fire extinguisher(s)
  • (Small) flammables cabinet
  • Vending machine with Arduino, raspberry pies, and sensors
  • Makerbots (3D printers)
  • Speakers and other AV equipment

(The rest of the list of ideas has been moved below. Please feel free to move items around, make changes, etc.)

Networking

Would be nice if we had our own wired network in the room separate from the rest of the library, with a single point where we could route between the library network to the space network. Then we could more easily host our own resources on the Makerspace LAN.

Would also be nice to get our own internet IP on the WAN side to route to, though perhaps just as well to provide inbound connections via a tunnel through another internet server or some such.

Plans

1. A fully flushed out dream big version

Main Features

  • Door to exterior of the building
  • Built-in Air Filtration System
  • Modular furniture with storage
  • Concrete floor, covered by epoxy (as brought up by Library)
  • Bench-top work lighting
  • Laser Cutter with fume extractor
  • U Print 3D Printer (modified to use PLA instead of ABS)
  • Ceiling mounted projector
  • Soldering station
  • Closable door (to the library)
  • Table-top work space
  • Electronic signage informing library patrons about upcoming open hours, other events, and ‘pop-up hours’

Diagram

diagram of the max option

Details, Maintenance

  • (Soldering) Desktop Ventilator
    • $70 per extractor, 300-500 hours per filter, 5 pack for $11. Probably one or two filters each extractor every year.
  • Laser cutter:
    • Wood - depends on thickness and type ~$10-20
    • HEPA filters ~$30-50/per All depends on frequency of use. HEPA filters have a either periodic life or use life.
  • UPrint
    • PLA/ABS $20-30/kg once modified
    • Otherwise ~$120-180/.5kg unmodified
    • Does not have a filter
    • uses $20 build plates that are supposed to be single use, but can actually do more.

2. A middle road option

Main Features

  • Large doorway walled off
  • U Print 3D Printer (modified to use PLA instead of ABS)
  • Laser Cutter with fume extractor
  • Soldering station (with desktop ventilation)
  • Closable door (to the library)
  • Under-counter Cabinets containing hand tools
  • Table-top work space
  • Concrete floor
  • Electronic signage informing library patrons about upcoming open hours, other events, and ‘pop-up hours’

3. A more minimalist option

Main Features

  • U Print 3D Printer (modified to use PLA instead of ABS)
  • Closable garage door (to the library)
  • Under-counter Cabinets containing hand tools
  • Soldering station (with desktop ventilation)
  • Table-top work space
  • Arts and crafts supplies
  • Whiteboard wall
